Matthew Chin, MD, MS

Dr Matthew Chin - Orthopedic Surgeon Sarasota - Orthopedic Surgeon Englewood, FL

Orthopedic Surgeon

Oncologic & Spine Surgery

Dr. Matthew Chin is a board-certified, dual fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon who specializes in both oncologic and spinal surgery. After graduating from Dartmouth College, where he majored in mathematics and chemistry, he received his master’s and doctorate degrees from Drexel University College of Medicine. Dr. Chin stayed in Philadelphia to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at Hahnemann University Hospital. During residency, Dr. Chin investigated several topics, ranging from on-field performance in post-concussive professional athletes to case reports of recurrences of rare oncologic entities. The results of his research have been published in peer-reviewed orthopedic journals and presented at multiple national scientific meetings.

Following his residency training, Dr. Chin pursued fellowships in orthopedic oncology and spinal surgery. First, he trained under internationally renowned oncologists at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, which is widely considered #1 in cancer care. As a quaternary referral center receiving patients from all over the world, Dr. Chin performed numerous rotationplasties, hemipelvectomies, and spondylectomies – some of the most rare and challenging procedures that have been described. Subsequently, he completed a second fellowship in spine surgery, training with nationally and internationally renowned spine surgeons at University of Maryland Medical Center/Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.

During his fellowships, he published a chapter on osteosarcoma, the most common sarcoma in bone, as well as articles on outcomes using mega-prostheses after distal femur resections, and outcomes after treating pathologic spine fractures with minimally invasive surgery.

Dr. Chin specializes in the comprehensive care of orthopedic oncology, which encompasses bone and soft-tissue tumors all over the body, both primary and metastatic, as well as treating pathologies of the entire spine, including spinal deformity and degenerative conditions, tumors, trauma, and infection. Dr. Chin has a wide array of experience, ranging from complex navigation-guided en bloc resections and revision surgery to minimally invasive techniques.

The diagnosis and treatment of both cancer and spinal disease is extremely difficult, and Dr. Chin is committed to providing comprehensive care by looking at the patient as a whole, not merely as an isolated problem. By clearly communicating with patients about the stress of a cancer diagnosis, or deconstructing the details of a potential surgery, he strives to build a relationship of trust with his patients and to guide them to the best possible outcome.

Dr. Chin is a published scholar, having authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and book chapters since 2006. He is a member of several surgical societies, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, and AO Spine North America.

In his free time, Dr. Chin enjoys spending time with his wife, who is pursuing her doctorate in public health, as well as traveling, swimming, snowboarding, and reading.
